Growing up working in my father’s general store, one thing I started noticing was the greeting that certain customers would give when they came in and how that “greeting” almost always stayed the same.
One person that I really remember ALWAYS had the same response morning or afternoon, if my father said, “good morning or good afternoon” to this man, he always said, “What’s good about it?” If the same man came in on a beautiful day and my father greeted him with, “beautiful day, isn’t it?” He would always say, “yeah, but we’re gonna pay for it!”
There was another man when if you said Hi or Good Morning, he would just nod his head. But, if you asked him how he was doing, he would ALWAYS say, “BREATHING”! Then there was one customer who ALWAYS had the same response when you hit the total sale button on the cash register, and it didn’t matter if the total was $.49 or $49.00. He would ALWAYS say, “Gee that’s expensive!”
A dairy company would come to the store and fill the dairy case, and the driver had one of the most unique responses ever to a greeting. First of all, let me say he was very fast in moving, displaying that he had no time for “chit chat”. His response to good morning: “BUSY!” And after several times of that, as he walked past you, he blurted out, “BUSY” without even being asked!
Now of course, the majority of customers were normal, happy “doing great”, “couldn’t be better”, “beautiful day”, type responses. And those were the ones who ALWAYS made the day a little better and brighter!
