Forbidden fruit?
Have you ever seen pictures or videos of toddlers who got into make-up or peanut butter or maybe even paint, and made a horrible mess? Then when confronted if they had made this mess – and even though they may be covered with the evidence…they calmly say, “Nooooo…”
After several more years, those same children when confronted with something they did wrong may start their response to the confrontation with “Yeah, But…” and different versions of that continue throughout life.
A few years ago, I saw a news story about a man who had been found guilty of stealing thousands of dollars from the business where he worked. When the detective on the show questioned the man about the stolen money he said, “Yeah, But I had planned to pay it all back before I got caught!”
Sometimes there ARE legitimate reasons why “Yeah, But” might get used, things such as: sickness, weather, travel problems and other things that are just plain out of our control. In most cases though, “Yeah, But…” followed by an explanation is usually a version of someone trying to “explain away” or cover up something they did – or don’t want to do.
Where did this all begin? The first man…
Genesis 3:11b (NIV) (God said) “Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?” 12. The man said, “The woman you put here with me – she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.”
Do you see what Adam said to God? He basically said: “Yeah, But…it was that woman you put here with me, she gave me some fruit and I ate it!”
Today, if we have trusted and believe in Jesus as our Savior, God will speak to us and show us things from his word – the Bible. Matthew 5:37 (NIV) “All you need to say is ‘yes’ or ‘no’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one.”
Let’s guard our thoughts and pray that we will always be willing to give a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ response whenever we are asked a question. That way we will never be labeled a “Yeah, But Christian” by anyone!
Till Next Time…..
