THE SHEPHERD

Last week I had a fasting blood draw done at my family physicians office, and when I came out of the office I decided to wait in my car for a few minutes and enjoy my coffee. Just then a woman came walking by on the small street that I was facing with three dogs on leashes. She stopped just short of a house that had a nice, terraced yard with three levels. She then took two of the dogs, one a Poodle mix, the other a Jack Russell mix, off their leashes and they ran up to the house with the nice yard-obviously home! The third dog was still on the leash and appeared to be a “multi-mix breed” and getting rather old, but it was clear to see that the woman definitely “loved” this “old dog”!

About that time the door of the house opened up and an arm (that’s all I saw) threw out a “knotted dog toy”. Well, the Jack Russell mix suddenly was in the air more than it was on the ground-jumping and bouncing constantly, waiting for the woman to throw the toy! She unleashed the old dog, looked like she told him to stay and went up the drive to the “bouncing Jack”. She took the toy from “Jack” and threw it as far as she could with that dog chasing it at rapid speed! The Poodle mix just came up to her to be petted and kissed and was totally content with no desire to play games as she continued to throw to the rapidly retrieving “bouncing Jack”!

Then I thought, “Uh-Oh I don’t see the old dog anywhere!” She continued to “play and pet” with the two dogs for a few more minutes, then she glanced back down the driveway and froze…She appeared to be calling the old dog’s name…nothing. She turned back to the other two dogs and her hand motions said “stay” FIRMLY! She then quickly came down that driveway looking in all directions, put her hands to her mouth calling out to the old dog as she disappeared out of sight. Meanwhile, her other two dogs surprisingly hadn’t moved at all waiting for her return. THEN…here she comes with the old dog on a leash-she found him (or her) and they’re all together again!

In the parable of the Lost Sheep, Jesus told us a great story of how a shepherd left his flock of ninety-nine sheep because he noticed one was lost and he had to go find it: “If a man has a hundred sheep, and one wanders away and is lost, what will he do? Won’t he leave the ninety-nine others and go out into the hills to search for the lost one? And if he finds it, he will rejoice over it more than over the ninety-nine others safe at home!” Matthew 18:12-13 (TLB)

It was clear to me that the woman with the three dogs “loved” each one of them and was willing to instantly “drop everything” to search for the one that was lost…God’s love is so much greater and His love for us never ends!

Till Next Time…..

  1. One of my favorite parables and reminders, but how appropriate the telling of this dog encounter you had. You know I was picturing my two—one lively “party animal” dog and one “old man” dog. Made me tear up and I’m so glad it had a happy ending! Reminds us how big God’s love for us is.❤️
